SmartParent is Canada’s first prenatal and parenting support program that provides reliable information delivered by text messaging to help guide parents through pregnancy and their baby’s first year of life. SmartParent is endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS).  

While SmartParent is currently available for parents in British Columbia and Nova Scotia, Canada, the program can be adapted for expansion into other regions and countries. Text messaging is an effective means of promoting behaviour change because messages are timed to be delivered just when decisions around that topic need to be made during pregnancy or the first year of parenting. Delivery is passive, so that parents don’t need to search and scroll through information online or on apps. Studies show that over 95% of text messages are read. As well, parents are reassured, because they receive all of the messages, that they are not missing critical information.
