Two students from the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) have been awarded the Bill Meekison Memorial Scholarship in Public Health, including Cluster member Jennifer Murray.
Jennifer is a PhD candidate investigating the high rate of preterm birth among the Quw’utsun (Cowichan) people. Her research uses community-based methods in partnership with Cowichan Tribes, a First Nations community whose traditional territory is located on southern Vancouver Island, BC. Her supervisory committee includes Dr. Patricia Janssen (primary supervisor), Dr. Jennifer Leason (co-supervisor), Quw’utsun Elder Doreen Peter, and Dr. Devon Greyson. Jennifer is a fourth-generation White settler and currently resides on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ People, also known as Victoria, BC.
The Bill Meekison Memorial Scholarship—totalling $5,350—was established through an endowment from friends and family in memory of Bill Meekison (1934–2019). It supports outstanding MPH and PhD students in SPPH who are pursuing research in public health.
