Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD, commonly known as “fracking”) is an industrial process for mining fossil fuels. The technique involves pumping water mixed with chemicals down drilled wells under high pressure to release oil and gas, and is now widely used in many parts of the world. Élyse Caron-Beaudoin and Dr. Margaret McGregor's webinar titled, "The Health Impacts of Unconventional Oil and Gas Development (Fracking) on Neonatal Outcomes for Mothers and Infants" reviewed the published epidemiological evidence on neonatal outcomes for mothers and infants exposed to UOGD. The presentation also described results of a prospective biomonitoring study in a cohort of pregnant women living nearby this industry in Northeast British Columbia, Canada.
