About the SmartMom Randomized Control Trial
Many people in Canada aren't receiving prenatal education. SmartMom was developed to fill this gap. SmartMom is a Canadian prenatal education program delivered via text messages that guide users through each week of pregnancy. The messages provide users with tips on how to have a healthy pregnancy and prepare for childbirth. Messages are delivered three times a week on days and times of their choosing. Each message contains a link to additional online resources. The information has been developed by health professionals and is current and reliable. SmartMom is endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC).
The SmartMom team are undertaking a study to determine if those who receive the SmartMom text message program have improved knowledge about healthy pregnancy and birth compared to those who are not in the SmartMom program. For this study, SmartMom is only available to those outside of British Columbia. The study is led by a group of senior university researchers across Canada led by Dr. Patricia Janssen, Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
